“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

We tried our hands at scratch building a canoe with maple saplings and his Aqua Quest Defender 10' x 7' heavy duty tarp.

We know first hand that the tarp can handle wind, rain, sleet and snow but wondered if it would hold up under the pressure of a person's body weight on the water. This is the first build of the canoe and it was a big lesson to learn. The bow and stern needed to be further up from the surface of the water so that water wouldn't be able to enter the craft when leaning to far forward or backward. The paddle needed to be longer in handle and probably stuffed with pine needles or leaves of some sort but all in all we consider this experiment a success!

This bushcraft tarp and canoe exercise is a great skill to add to our bushcraft toolbox!
