“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

Here is a comparison of my USMC 3 Season Sleeping Bag (with extreme cold weather bag) and IBC (improved bivy sack) to my Military Modular Sleeping System. Both systems are fantastic and have wonderful features. I do have a personal favorite but also a few thoughts on how it could be better. Take a look as I take the bags out of my USMC FILBE backpack and display these two systems out on my Aqua Quest Defender 10x10 tarp.

The 3 Season Sleep System is lightweight, compactable and waterproof is available in coyote 497/498

The sleeping bag is made with a light weight compactable batting that provides a minimum 5.3 CLO rating, allowing the user to sleep comfortably in temperatures above 20°F. When used with the IBC, a ground insulator pad and proper clothing, intermittent use down to 5°F is achievable. This bag is also produced with an anti-microbial inner liner that helps to protect against the growth of microorganisms that can be dangerous to the user.

Improved Bivy Cover

When fully encapsulated in the IBC, the user is provided maximum environmental protection. The waterproof IBC is also made of a micro-porous (gas permeable) laminated fabric with sealed seams that allows the user to sleep fully encapsulated without respiratory distress in adverse conditions -40°F and above.

Environmental Protection

  • The bivy cover protects against rain, snow, dew, dust, wind, and bugs for outdoor use
  • Maximum environmental protection is provided when the user is completely enclosed.

How to Use

  • Close the bivy: Adjust the zipper with one zipper tab/slider located at the bottom of each side - next to each hip. To close, grab one zipper slider in each hand and pull upward until they meet over the face.
  • Open the bivy: Hook your finger between where the zipper sliders meet or grab the bivy material right below the sliders and pull down to open.
  • Face Stand-off: Pull the stiffeners at each end to straighten and then bend them upward until the desired stand-off is achieved. Remove one or both stiffeners if preferred.
  • Ventillation: Unzip the flap that covers the screen window. When the flap is fully open, roll the flap and place the loop over the toggle at the bottom of the screen.
  • When practical, air dry thoroughly each day. At a minimum, shake off any water and brush off dirt before stuffing the bivy in the compression stuff sack.

For Safe Use

  • FLAMMABLE: NEVER SMOKE IN BAG. KEEP AWAY FROM FLAME.
  • For EMERGENCY exit, grab material next to zipper sliders and pull down to open.
  • Protect the bivy bottom from the ground with tarp and or sleeping pad.
  • DO NOT drag bivy on the ground or puncture to keep it waterproof.
  • At home base, DO NOT leave the bivy in the compression stuff sack. Clean and dry the bivy and store it in the mesh storage bag provided.

Keep Bivy Clean

  • Brush the dirt and debris off yourself and clothing before entering the bivy.
  • Remove grease and spots from the bivy by spot cleaning with damp cloth and soap and rinse.
  • Launder by machine washing and tumble drying on delicate cycles and low temperatures. Rinse thoroughly to maintain waterproofing.
  • DO NOT bleach, use fabric softener, iron or Dry Clean.

One of the four components of the Three Season Sleep System (3S) The WSS provides waterproof storage of the Sleeping Bag and Bivy Cover and will fit into the bottom of the Improved Load bearing Equipment (ILBE) main pack. Waterproofing is achieved by the stuff sacks fabric, bag construction and closure design. The bag is constructed utilizing Radio Frequency fabrication, with no sewn seams for maximum waterproofing. The smooth internal and external surfaces facilitate packing. Volume reduction is accomplished by the shape, hands-free waterproof air purge value and two compression straps for end to end length reduction.
